Large 1930s Spanish Republican Flag British Civil War Brigadas Internacionales

£495.00

This very rare and unique flag is stamped with the lettering “SPANISH REP” in English, making it possible it was for a ‘Brigadas Internacionales’, or ‘The International Brigades’ – soldiers from foreign countries fighting in support of the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. This flag came with another matching flag of differing orientation, which is also for sale. The flag is erroneous, as the three bands of red, yellow and purple should be of equal width, although it appears that the red stripe has been thinned in height at some point. It was found in Wales, a country with strong support for the left, especially among the mining communities.

The purple (Spanish: morado oscuro), represents Castile and León by recalling the Pendón Morado, the ancient armorial banner of Castile. The colours of red and yellow symbolise the territories of the former Crown of Aragon.

It measures approximately 204cm x 117cm. The flag shows fading, some age related marks throughout, and small holes (please see photos).

Perfect for any collector or display.
