Antique 1798-1809 French Silver 950/1000 Timbale Beaker Tulip Cup Moselle, Lorraine 104g

£425.00

This lovely French silver tulip shaped timbale or beaker weighs 104g and measures 4″ tall x 3″ wide. There are a number of clear hallmarks, including:

The octagonal stamp featuring a cockerel with the cipher 1 to the left side is the 950/1000 silver mark for Départements (excluding Paris). This mark was used from June 1798 and September 1809. The man’s head with the number 57 is a guarantee mark for medium objects. It also shows an inventory mark for large objects – the dog’s head with number 57, which was applied few years later, in 1819. Along with a guarantee mark applied in 1819 – the man head faced right with number 57 written on his hat. Previous to 1809 there were 130 territorial departments, with the number 57 being allocated to Department Moselle (in the North East of France, within the Lorraine region), so all the hallmarks applied with number 57 were assayed in Metz, Department Moselle. The VAR hallmark is most likely the maker’s mark, which I have not been able to identify.

It shows some tarnishing to the interior, and a couple of small dints. Please see photos for condition, if you would like more photos please get in touch.
